1880- A Different US Census

The 1880 census represented a change from all federal censuses that came before it and was perhaps the first “modern” census. Unlike the 1790-1870 censuses, which were under the jurisdiction of the district courts with federal marshals as overseers, the 1880 census was managed by the superintendent of the census as the director of a permanent Census Bureau in the U.S. Department of the Interior.
